Nature Magazine: Mosquitoes score in chemical war

WEST NILE VIRUS (WNV)

According to the CDC, the best defense against this disease is to prevent mosquito bites. We agree! The CDC site will recommend DEET and other chemical insect repellents. The best defense outside of a DEET or other strong chemical like picaridin is to find a safe non chemical DEET-free insect repellent that will actually repel mosquitoes.

West Nile Virus is a dangerous infectious disease which has been reported in all media outlets in the United States as we continue to see the presentation of this disease which effects birds, horses, and humans. As stated on the CDC site, West Nile Virus is a potentially serious illness which has established itself as a seasonal epidemic in North America and flares up in the summer and continues into the fall. The symptoms of West Nile Virus can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, convulsions, coma, and paralysis. These symptoms can last several weeks and the neurological effect can be permanent.

LYME DISEASE

Lyme Disease is common in the United States and is, in fact, found throughout 49 of 50 states. It is a highly infectious disease attributed to the bite of the Ixodes tick. The disease is caused by a bacterium that lives in the stomach of field mice found all over America and is passed to the ticks. These ticks are also commonly found on deer and hence have been given the name Deer Ticks.

Lyme Disease is an often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed condition and is currently an epidemic in the USA. The symptoms of Lyme Disease can include intense fatigue, joint pain and swelling, slow or slurred speech, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, tremors, and nausea with vomiting in addition to short and long term memory loss and poor word retrieval. Lyme Disease is like any other bacterial infection, except it is exceedingly difficult to stop/cure the infection. This is why it is so important to either diagnose in the early phase or, more importantly, prevent getting bitten in the first place. Don't be fooled into thinking it won't happen to you. You won't feel the bite of a tick and they are very good at concealing themselves in areas of your body that are hard for you to locate such as the back of neck, hairline, back and body creases. Your best armor may be a reliable insect repellent to prevent tick bites. So your only question should be: Do you want a DEET or permethrin based chemical repellent or do you want a natural product that is effective? Either way, should keep yourself protected. Don't leave home without it.
